Why ChatGPT Isn't Recommending Your Business (and How to Fix It)
Ask an AI to recommend a business like yours and it names a competitor. Here is why AI search skips you, and the five fixes that get you into the answer.
Try this right now. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask it to recommend a business like yours in your city. “Best commercial plumber in Seattle.” “Top bookkeeper for small businesses near me.” Then see whether you are in the answer.
For most business owners, the result stings a little. The AI confidently names three or four competitors, links to them, and never mentions you. It is not personal, and it is not random. The AI made a specific decision about whose business to trust as the answer, and right now that decision is going against you. Here is why, and what to do about it.
AI does not rank you. it retrieves and trusts you
The instinct is to think of this like Google: “I need to rank higher.” But an AI answer does not work like a list of links. The model reads a pile of sources, decides which ones it trusts, writes a single answer, and cites the handful it leaned on. You are not trying to climb a list. You are trying to become one of the few sources the model is willing to stand behind.
That means the question is not “where do I rank?” It is “can the AI find me, understand what I am, quote me, and trust me?” If the answer to any of those is no, you are invisible, no matter how good your business actually is.
A competitor showing up instead of you usually is not better at the work. They are just more legible to the machine.
The five reasons it skips you
When a business is missing from AI answers, it is almost always one or more of these. and every one of them is fixable.
Notice what is not on that list: how long you have been in business, how good your reviews are, how much you care about your customers. All of that is real, and all of it is invisible to a language model if the five things above are not in place. The model cannot taste your work. It can only read your signals.
Find out exactly where you stand
You do not have to guess which of the five is holding you back. I built a free AI Search Readiness checker that runs a live audit of any page and scores it out of 100 across exactly these signals, then tells you your single biggest gap. It takes a few seconds and there is no signup to see your result.
Most owners run it expecting a decent score and get a wake-up call. A site can look polished and professional to a human and still be nearly unreadable to an AI, because the signals that decide this are invisible on the surface. The score turns that hidden layer into a number you can actually act on.
How to actually get into the answer
Fixing this is not a growth hack. It is the same unglamorous, durable work that has always separated the businesses that get found from the ones that do not, aimed at a new target.
- Make yourself retrievable. Clean, indexable pages with real titles and a reachable sitemap. The floor everything else stands on.
- Define your entity. Structured data that states plainly who you are, where you are, and what you do, so the model is sure instead of guessing.
- Write things worth quoting. Clear, direct answers to the questions your customers actually ask, in language a model can lift and attribute to you.
- Build trust signals. Real authorship, consistent branding, and corroboration across the places AI pulls from.
- Clear the technical path. Fast, clean, machine-readable pages, down to an llms.txt, so the crawlers feeding the models ingest you accurately.

The window is open, for now
Here is the part that should light a fire. Almost none of your competitors have done this yet. The businesses showing up in AI answers today mostly got there by accident, and the ones deliberately optimizing for it are rare. That makes this a land grab. The first business in a market to get retrievable, quotable, and trusted tends to become the default answer, and that position compounds, because trust feeds on itself.
That will not last. As more businesses wake up to AI search, the citations will get competitive the same way page-one rankings did. The cheapest time to claim your spot is while most of your market is still asking “does this even matter yet?”
Run the free check and see where you stand. If the answer is “not great,” good. now you know what your competitors do not, and you have a head start on fixing it. When you are ready to close the gap, let’s talk.
