Do You Need an SEO Agency or a Freelancer? A Seattle Business Owner's Guide
Agency or freelancer for your SEO? Here's an honest comparison of cost, expertise, and communication so Seattle-area business owners can choose what actually fits.
When a Seattle-area business decides to invest in SEO, the first fork in the road is: agency or freelancer? Both can work. But they’re genuinely different, and the right choice depends on your situation. Here’s an honest comparison — including where I fit, so you can weigh it fairly.
What an agency gives you
Agencies bring scale and breadth — a team covering SEO, paid ads, social, design, and content, with the capacity to handle a large, multi-channel operation. If you’re an enterprise running many campaigns at once, that breadth matters. The tradeoffs: you pay for overhead (offices, account managers, layers), your account may be handled by junior staff while a senior name sold you, and communication runs through intermediaries.
What a specialist freelancer gives you
With a specialist, you work directly with the person doing the work — no telephone game, no junior handoff. You’re paying for expertise, not overhead, which usually means better value. The person who understands your business is the one executing on it. The tradeoff is capacity: a freelancer isn’t a 20-person team, so for a sprawling multi-brand operation an agency may fit better.
The question that actually decides it
It comes down to this: do you need breadth or depth? A large enterprise juggling many channels often needs an agency’s breadth. A small-to-mid business that wants focused, expert execution and a direct relationship is usually better served by a specialist — someone who brings deep experience and treats your site like it matters, because to them it does.
Where I fit
I’m the specialist end of that spectrum — 12+ years across technical SEO, development, and program management, working directly with owners. You can see the range of businesses I’ve done this for on my portfolio, and the results speak in the case studies. No account managers, no junior handoff — just the person who’ll actually do the work.
If you’re weighing your options, tell me about your business and I’ll give you a straight answer about whether I’m the right fit — even if that answer is that an agency suits you better.
